The AMD 1603 error usually occurs when you use the AMD Installer to install an AMD software package. You will find that the driver you are trying to install will not fully install, and shortly thereafter the Windows update will not work. In this final part of our troubleshooting series, we’re going to look at AMD bug 1603.
How to solve the AMD problem 1603
Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes the corrupted temporary data that could be causing the problem.
Several factors can cause this particular problem, ranging from a corrupted registry key to a missed Windows update. Here are the steps to follow to solve this problem.
Start SFC scan
SFC scanning, or system file scanning, scans for damaged system files on your computer and attempts to repair them.
- Open the Start menu and type cmd. Right-click the command line icon and click Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt when it appears.
- At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
- Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter.
- This will run a scan of the system files and repair any damaged system files on your computer.
- Restart your computer and try to reinstall the AMD drivers.
Check if the AMD 1603 error is still present.
Reinstalling distributed files with Visual C++
This problem can also be caused by corrupt Microsoft Visual C++ distributions installed on the local computer. To fix this, do the following.
- Obtain versions of Microsoft Visual C++ distributions currently listed under Programs and Features.
- Remove all currently installed versions of Microsoft Visual C++.
- Download the distribution kit of Microsoft Visual C++: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads.
Check if the AMD 1603 error is still present.
Install the AMDdrivers correctly.
- Download the AMD cleaning program at https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-601.
- Find the file where it was saved and double-click AMDCleanupUtility.exe.
- A dialog box should appear indicating that the AMD Cleaning Utility has detected that the system is in unsafe mode, with an option to restart the system to run the utility in safe mode :
- Click Yes, the system will reboot and the AMD Cleaning Utility will run in safe mode.
- The next dialog box will show a warning that the AMD Cleanup utility will remove all components and applications of the AMD driver.
- Press OK to continue.
- After you click OK, the utility resizes to the notification area (system tray) and displays its progress as a tooltip.
- The cleaning process continues in the background. To check the progress, move the mouse over the AMD icon in the taskbar.
- When the cleaning process is complete, a success message is displayed. Click View Report to see the list of removed components, otherwise click Done to exit the utility.
- Restart the computer.
Once you have removed the drivers, it is time to install the latest driver update. This can be done with the AMD Driver Auto Detect tool, which can be downloaded from https://www.amd.com/en/support.
- Visit AMD’s Drivers and Support page for information on how to automatically detect and install Radeon graphics drivers for Windows.
- Click DOWNLOAD NOW to begin downloading the executable file of the utility.
- When the download is complete, run the file to start the installation program.
- Click Install to extract the required files.
- When the extraction of the files is complete, the program should start automatically.
- Read the end user license agreement and user upgrade program information.
- Click the Accept and Set button to continue, or close the window to exit the AMD AutoDriver Detection program.
- After you click Accept and Install, the program will try to detect the installed AMD graphics product and operating system.
- After successfully detecting your system configuration, the utility displays the latest recommended and additional driver packages compatible with your graphics product, as well as the currently installed driver version.
- Select the version you want and choose express installation.
- After downloading the driver package, the installation should start automatically.
- Restart your computer
Check if the AMD 1603 error is still present.
Temporary disablement of antivirus
One of the factors that can cause this problem is the antivirus software installed on your computer. To see if this is the cause of the problem, try disabling it.
If you use Windows security
- Select Start – Settings > Update and Security – Windows Security – Antivirus and Threat Protection > Manage Settings.
- Turn off real-time protection.
If you use Avast
- Find the Avast icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
- Click on Avast Shield Management.
- Look for options to disable the program – the options are to disable the program for 10 minutes, an hour until you restart the computer, or permanently (until you turn it back on yourself). Choose the option that suits you best, and then disable the program.
If you use AVG
- Find the AVG icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
- Click on the button Disable AVG protection temporarily.
- Select how long you want AVG to shut down and whether you want AVG to shut down the firewall as well.
- Click OK to disable the antivirus program.
If you are using McAfee
- Find the McAfee Antivirus icon on your computer’s taskbar and right-click on it.
- Click on Exit.
- A dialog box should appear to warn you that McAfee protection will be disabled. Click Yes in this dialog box to disable the antivirus program.
Check if the AMD 1603 error is still present.
Delete folder Install AMD.
- Press Windows + E and open Windows Explorer.
- Navigate to This PC > Local drive (C:) or to the location of your Windows installation.
- Select the AMD folder and press Shift + Del. If you are prompted to obtain administrator privileges to perform this action, you should do so.
- Try reinstalling the AMD drivers.
Check if the AMD 1603 error is still present.
Windows Update
- Click on the Start button, type Windows Update and press Enter.
- Click Check for updates and wait for Windows to download and update the system.
- Restart the computer
Check if the AMD 1603 error is still present.
