Rust is a very popular multiplayer survival video game developed by Facepunch Studios. The game confronts you with other players and the open world environment with the sole purpose of survival. While it’s a solid performance game, there are some problems we’re going to talk about today. In this final part of our troubleshooting series, we will look at the problem of emergency rust failures.
Before following the recommended troubleshooting steps for this particular problem, try restarting your computer. This allows you to update the operating system, remove corrupted temporary data and fix most software problems quite effectively.
Several factors can cause this particular problem, from old graphics drivers to low virtual memory. Below are the recommended troubleshooting steps to follow to resolve this issue.
Beta test opt-out
One of the main causes of this problem is a bug in the Steam software, and this bug can be injected into your system if you are using the beta version of Steam. This beta version is available before the stable release because it gives the developer a chance to check for bugs. You should try to detach yourself from the beta version of Steam and only use the stable version of the software.
- Start the Steam client by double-clicking on the desktop.
- In the menu at the top of the client screen, click on Steam and select Settings. In the Settings window, make sure you stay on the Account tab and click the Edit button under Beta Participation.
- A new window should open. Look again under Beta Participation and click on it to open the drop-down menu. Select the NONE setting – Opt-out of all beta programs and apply the changes you made.
- Click on the Steam option in the upper left corner of the Steam client and select Exit to close Steam completely.
- Getting back on track.

Increase the size of the exchange file
A swap file, also known as a page file, is a file on your hard drive that is typically used by Windows when memory is full. Increasing the size of the exchange file on your computer usually fixes this particular problem.
- Right-click on the entries for this computer that you normally find on the desktop or in the file explorer. Select properties
- Click the Advanced System Settings button on the right side of the window and go to Advanced under Performance, click Settings, and click the Advanced tab in that window.
- In the Virtual Memory section, click the Edit button. If the Automatically manage swap file size for all drives option is selected, clear the check box and select the partition or drive where you want to store the swap file memory.
- After choosing the appropriate player, click on the button icon next to Custom Size and select Initial and Maximum. The rule of thumb for dealing with this error is to allocate two gigabytes more than you have already used.
- Make sure the starting size and maximum size are set to the same value to avoid large changes.

Try to play the game with DirectX9.
If you are running the game under DirectX11, try running it under DirectX9 and see if the problem occurs then.
- Launch Steam on your PC by double-clicking the entry on the desktop.
- Go to the Library section of the Steam window by finding the Library tab at the top of the window and look for Rust in the list of games you have in your library.
- Right-click on the game entry in the list and select Properties from the context menu that appears on the screen. Click Set up Startup Settings.
- Type -dx9 at the command prompt. If there were other boot options before, make sure to separate this option with a space. Press OK key to confirm the changes.
- Try playing the game on the Library tab.

Update driver graphic card
One of the factors that can cause this problem is an outdated graphics card driver. To make sure you have the latest version of the driver installed, uninstall the graphics driver and install the new version from the official website.
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, follow these steps.
- Press Win+R (Windows logo key and the R key at the same time) to bring up the Run window.
- Type msconfig and click OK. Then the system settings area opens.
- When the System Configuration tab opens, click the Download tab. In the Startup Options section, select the Secure Startup check box and click OK.
- If you are prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, click the Restart button and you will be put in Safe Mode.
- Open your local hard drive by clicking on This PC, then Local Hard Drive C. There you should see the NVIDIA folder. Right click and select Delete.
- Click on Start and type Run. Choose Run and the Run dialog box will appear.
- Type devmgmt.msc in the start window and click OK, which should open a Device Manager window.
- Expand the Display Adapter field. This list shows all network adapters installed on the device. Right-click on the Nvidia adapter you want to remove and select Remove.
- Click OK when prompted to remove the device. This removes the adapter from the list and removes the driver.
- Press Win+R (Windows logo key and the R key at the same time) to bring up the Run window.
- Type msconfig and click OK. Then the system settings area opens.
- When the System Configuration tab opens, click the Download tab. In the Boot Options section, uncheck the Secure Boot check box and click OK.
- If you are prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, click Restart.
- Download the latest NVIDIA driver for your computer here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx.
- Run the installation file and follow the instructions on screen. Select the Custom Installation option and check all boxes in the Custom Installation Options fields. Also check the box to perform a clean install.
- Restart your computer
If you have an AMD graphics card, follow these steps.
- Download the AMD cleaning program at https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-601.
- Find the file where it was saved and double-click AMDCleanupUtility.exe.
- A dialog box should appear indicating that the AMD Cleaning Utility has detected that the system is in unsafe mode, with an option to restart the system to run the utility in safe mode :
- Click Yes, the system will reboot and the AMD Cleaning Utility will run in safe mode.
- The next dialog box will show a warning that the AMD Cleanup utility will remove all components and applications of the AMD driver.
- Press OK to continue.
- After you click OK, the utility resizes to the notification area (system tray) and displays its progress as a tooltip.
- The cleaning process continues in the background. To check the progress, move the mouse over the AMD icon in the taskbar.
- When the cleaning process is complete, a success message is displayed. Click View Report to see the list of removed components, otherwise click Done to exit the utility.
- Restart the computer.
Once you have removed the drivers, it is time to install the latest driver update. This can be done with the AMD Driver Auto Detect tool, which can be downloaded from https://www.amd.com/en/support.
- Visit AMD’s Drivers and Support page for information on how to automatically detect and install Radeon graphics drivers for Windows.
- Click DOWNLOAD NOW to begin downloading the executable file of the utility.
- When the download is complete, run the file to start the installation program.
- Click Install to extract the required files.
- When the extraction of the files is complete, the program should start automatically.
- Read the end user license agreement and user upgrade program information.
- Click the Accept and Set button to continue, or close the window to exit the AMD AutoDriver Detection program.
- After you click Accept and Install, the program will try to detect the installed AMD graphics product and operating system.
- After successfully detecting your system configuration, the utility displays the latest recommended and additional driver packages compatible with your graphics product, as well as the currently installed driver version.
- Select the version you want and choose express installation.
- After downloading the driver package, the installation should start automatically.
- Restart your computer
If you have integrated graphics card (Intel)
- Press the Windows logo + the R key to start the Run application.
- Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box and press Enter to start Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, expand the display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics drivers, click Uninstall, and start the uninstall wizard to remove the drivers.
- Restart your computer. Once the computer boots up, it should automatically reinstall the same version of the graphics drivers.
