Skyrim, also known as Old Scrolls V : Skyrim is an action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls series. The game revolves around the main character’s goal to defeat Alduin, the dragon who is said to be destroying the world. While it is a solid game, you may run into problems at times. In this latest installment of our bugfix series, we look at the Skyrim rendering problem.
What to do if Skyrim won’t initialize the renderer
Restart your computer or phone before performing any of the troubleshooting steps described below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes the corrupted temporary data that could be causing the problem.
This particular problem can be caused by several factors, ranging from outdated software to driver issues. Here are the recommended steps to solve this problem.
Disable update mods and patches
If you use mods in the game, it’s best to disable them beforehand. You should also make sure the game has the latest patches installed.
- Version of old rolls Q: Skyrim Special Edition and select Mods from the main menu.
- Find the mod you want to delete in your library.
- Select the mod you want to delete and select Delete. Do it for all the fashionistas.
- You can also disable mods in this menu if you don’t want to delete them.
Trying to check that Skyrim couldn’t get the rendering engine to work, but the problem still exists.
Starting the game in windowed mode
One solution that most users find effective to temporarily solve the problem is to run the game in windowed mode.
- Open the Skyrim launcher and press Options on the main screen.
- Select the Window Mode check box in the lower left corner of the screen.
- You can also try changing the resolution and see if that helps.
- Click Apply.
Check if there is a problem with the rendering.
Delete game files
There are cases where game settings files can cause this problem. Try deleting these files to load the default settings.
- Close the game completely.
- Go to the folder where Steam is installed and delete the folder appcache. Steam will automatically create them the next time you start up.
- Go to the Skyrim map. Default location : C:user name – My games
- Delete the following two files : Skyrim.ini, SkyrimPrefs.ini
- Restart the computer
Make sure Skyrim’s rendering isn’t fixed yet.
Update your graphics driver
In most cases, this problem is caused by outdated or damaged graphics drivers. Therefore, you should make sure that the driver installed on your computer is up to date.
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, follow these steps.
- Press Win+R (Windows logo key and the R key) simultaneously to call up the Run window.
- Type msconfig and press OK. Then the system settings area opens.
- When you open the system configuration, go to register Boot. In the Boot Options section, select the Secure Boot check box and click OK.
- When prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, press Restart and you will be in safe mode.
- Open the local drive by pressing This PC , then Local Drive C. Here you should see the NVIDIA folder. Right click and select Delete.
- Click Run and enter Run. Choose Run, the Run dialog box appears.
- In the startup window, type devmgmt.msc and press OK , which displays the Device Manager window.
- Expand Field Display Adapter . This list shows all network adapters installed on the device. Right-click on the Nvidia adapter you want to remove and select Delete.
- Press OK when prompted to eject the camera. This removes the adapter from the list and the driver.
- Press Win+R (Windows logo key and R key) simultaneously to display the Run window.
- Type msconfig and press OK. Then the system settings area opens.
- When you open the system configuration, go to register Boot. In the Boot Options section, disable Secure Boot and click OK.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, press Restart.
- Download the latest NVIDIA driver for your computer here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx.
- Run the installation file and follow the instructions on screen. Select the Custom Installation option and check all boxes in the Custom Installation Options fields. Also check the box to perform a clean install.
- Restart the computer
If you have an AMD graphics card, follow these steps.
- Download the AMD cleaning program at https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-601.
- Find the file where it was saved and double-click the AMDCleanupUtility.exe file.
- A dialog box should appear indicating that the AMD Cleaning Utility has detected that the system is in unsafe mode, with an option to restart the system to run the utility in safe mode :
- Press Yes , the system will reboot and the AMD Cleaning Utility will operate in safe mode.
- The following dialog box warns you that the AMD Cleanup utility will remove all AMD driver components and applications.
- Press OK to continue.
- After you press OK , the utility resizes to fit the taskbar and displays its progress as a tooltip.
- The cleaning process continues in the background. To check the progress, move the mouse over the AMD icon in the taskbar.
- When the cleaning process is complete, a success message is displayed. Press View Report to display the list of deleted items, otherwise press Done to exit the utility.
- Restart the computer.
After removing the drivers, it’s time to install the latest driver update. This can be done with the AMD Driver Auto Detect tool, which can be downloaded from https://www.amd.com/en/support.
- Visit the AMD Drivers and Support site to learn how to automatically detect and install Radeon graphics drivers for Windows.
- Press the DOWNLOAD NOW key to start downloading the executable file from the device.
- When the download is complete, run the file to start the installation program.
- Press Set to extract the desired files.
- Once the files are extracted, the program should start automatically.
- See the end user license agreement and information about the user upgrade program.
- Click Accept and set to continue or close the window to exit the AMD Pilot Auto Detection Tool.
- After you click Accept and Install, the program will try to detect the installed AMD graphics product and operating system.
- After detecting the system configuration, the utility displays the latest recommended and additional driver packages compatible with the graphics product, as well as the currently installed driver version.
- Select the version you want and choose Express Install .
- After downloading the driver package, the installation should start automatically.
- Restart the computer
With integrated graphics (Intel)
- Press + R in the Windows logo to start Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to start Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, develop Viewer Adapters.
- Right-click on the graphics drivers, click Uninstall , and start the uninstall wizard to remove the drivers.
- Restart the computer. Once the computer boots up, it should automatically reinstall the same version of the graphics drivers.
Check if the initialization of the Skyrim rendering engine is still problematic.
