While this is an excellent feature, questions sometimes arise. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series, we’ll tackle the unsolvable problem of steam buildup.

Solve the problem of steam system overlap not working
Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes the corrupted temporary data that could be causing the problem.
Several factors can cause this particular problem, ranging from access issues to configuration errors. Here are the steps to follow to solve this problem.
Providing administrative access to steam
One of the reasons for this problem is that Steam does not have administrative access. Try giving this software administrative access and then see if the problem persists.
- Open the Steam catalog. By default it is located in C:Program Files (x86)-Steam.
- Find the file named Steam.exe, right click on it and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab at the top of the screen. At the bottom of the window, you will see the Run this program as administrator check box. Make sure it’s checked. Save the changes and exit.
- Find the file named GameOverlayUI.exe. Right click and select properties. Select the Compatibility tab at the top of the screen. At the bottom of the window, you will see the Run this program as administrator check box. Make sure it’s checked. Save the changes and exit.
- Restart Steam
Check if there is still a problem with the steam overlap.

- Open your Steam client.
- Click on the Steam option in the top left corner of the window. Select Settings from the drop-down list to open the settings interface.
- Click on the Game tab on the left side of the screen. Here you see a checkbox to activate steam overlay during the game. Make sure it’s checked. You can also check that you are pressing the overlapping key combinations correctly. You can also change them if you want.
- Click on the Library tab at the top of the window. The games installed on your computer are listed here. Right click on the game where the overlay is not working and select Properties.
- You will see another checkbox that says Enable steam overlay during play. Make sure it’s checked.
- Steam restart.

Deactivate third-party requests
There are third party applications that can disrupt the dam layer. Some applications are known to cause problems, such as Fraps and Synapse. Try closing these requests via Task Manager and then check if the problem persists.
Check local game and library files
It is possible that corrupt gambling is the cause of this problem. You can solve this problem by checking your game files.
- Open your Steam client and click on the library above. Select a set in which the steam overlay is not opened.
- Right-click on the game where the error occurs and select Properties.
- In Properties, go to the Local Files tab and click on the Check Integrity of Game Files option. After that, Steam will start checking all available files. If a file is missing or damaged, the file will be re-uploaded and replaced accordingly.
- Go to your settings by tapping on the Settings option after clicking on Steam at the bottom left of the screen. Once you are in the settings, open the Downloads tab on the left side of the interface.
- You will see a box labeled Steam Folder Library. Click with the mouse
- All information on vapour content is given. Right click on it and select Restore library files.
- Restart Steam

Steam exception added to antivirus
It is possible that your antivirus software is interfering with Steam. This can cause an overlap problem. To fix this, you need to add Steam as an exception to your antivirus.
Avira
- Go to the taskbar at the bottom right of your screen and click on the little umbrella you see there.
- The window with the title Occupational Safety opens. Click on the Advanced option at the top and a drop-down menu will appear. Click Settings in the drop-down menu.
- Select PC Protection and then go to Scan. When scanning, you will be presented with several options. Choose Exceptions and a dialog box will appear.
- The address/path to the Steam directory must be entered in the dialog to exclude it. You can click the Browse button and select the Steam folder via the file explorer to add it to the exclusions list. When you have selected the folder, click OK and then click Add. Steam should now be added to the list of exceptions.
Bitdefender
- Open Bitdefender and go to the protection window by clicking on the shield icon.
- Click on the Show modules link.
- Click the Settings icon in the upper right corner of the antivirus program.
- Click on the Exceptions tab in the window.
- Click on the list of files and folders that are excluded from the scan.
- Press the ADD. Navigate to the Steam folder and select the folder named Steam to exclude it from the scan. You must also select both options before adding an exception.
- Click the Add button and save your changes.
- You can also add Steam.exe to the exclusion list by clicking on the list of processes that are excluded from scanning. When the pop-up window appears, you can navigate to Steam.exe, which is located in Steam’s main folder. Select both and save the changes.
Avast
- Open the Avast interface.
- Press the Settings button in the lower left corner of the screen.
- Go to General and scroll down until you find Exceptions.
- Expand the section and you will see a dialog box where you can add global exceptions. Go to your Steam folder with the Browse option. The default location for Steam is (C:Program Files:Steam). If you have Steam installed in another folder, you can browse there as well.
- Once you’ve chosen your Steam folder, click ADD in the lower left corner of the screen. Click OK, and Steam will be added to Avast Antivirus’ global exclusions.
Windows Defender
- Click on the Windows button and type Windows Defender in the search box. Open the Windows Defender security center.
- In a new window you will find a list of available options. Select the Virus and Threat Protection option.
- Access to virus and threat protection settings. Windows may ask you to allow the administrator to use this feature. If yes, click Yes.
- Look for the window called Add or Remove Exclusions. Click on it and you will be taken to a menu where you can add exceptions. You can exclude folders, extensions and even files. In this case, we will exclude the entire Steam folder that is located in the folder where you downloaded it.
- Click the Exclude folder option and navigate to the Steam Services Directory. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.
Harmful profits
- Open the malware bar window by clicking on the icon in the taskbar at the bottom right of the screen.
- Click on the Malware Exclusions tab on the left side of the window.
- This tab contains the Add Folder option. Clicking on it will take you to the file explorer, from where you can easily select the Steam directory. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.
Norton
- Open the Norton application from the taskbar icon in the bottom right corner of your Windows screen.
- Go to his settings.
- Select the Fraud and Risk tab. Several options will be presented to you. Look for exclusions and low risk in the low countries. Click on it to enlarge. On the Exclude Items from Scans page, click the Configure Before button.
- You can add your Steam folder to the exceptions list. Click on Add Folders and navigate to the Steam folder. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.
Kaspersky
- Open Kaspersky AV from the system tray icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- G in the Settings menu.
- In the Preferences, select the Advanced tab and choose the Threats and Exceptions tab from the list of options.
- In the Threats and Exceptions settings, click the Configure Exceptions button in the center of the screen.
- In the exceptions window, select Add at the bottom right of the screen.
- Now navigate to the steam directory using the Browse button. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.
CODE ESET NOD 32
- Open the ESET product from the taskbar icon in the bottom right corner.
- Click the Configuration tab and select Computer Security from the list of options.
- Select the gear icon next to Real-time File System Protection. After clicking, you will have the opportunity to change the exceptions. Click on it.
- Click the Add icon and then navigate to the Steam folder. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.
McAfee
- Open McAfee Antivirus by clicking on its icon on the toolbar in the lower right corner of Windows.
- Click on Security Management.
- Select the Schedule and Run Scan option from the Virus and Spyware Protection window.
- Select the Scan Schedules option from the list of options below. A new window will open where you will see an Add button on the Excluded Files and Folders tab. Select the Steam folder after clicking Add via File Explorer. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.
Check if there is still a problem with the steam overlap.
Disable firewall
It is possible that your computer’s firewall is causing this problem. To see if you turn it off.
- Enter the firewall in the search dialog box
- Select the option labeled Windows Firewall Defender.
- Look for the option to enable or disable the Windows Firewall. It will then be on the left side of the screen.
- There are two flags. One for private networks and one for public networks. You can easily disable the firewall for both by clicking on the Disable Windows Firewall option.
- After you have made the changes, press OK to save the settings and exit.

Checking for Windowsupdates
Open the Settings application by pressing the Start button and then the cog icon.
- Go to Updates and Security.
- Click on Check for Updates, if there are updates, they will be downloaded and requested for installation.
- Once the updates are installed, restart your computer.

Steam file update
If the above steps don’t solve the problem, then you need to update your Steam files.
- Check your steam directory. The default location of your folder is C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam.
- Search for the following files and folders : User Data (folder), Steam.exe (application), Steamapps (folder).
- Delete all other files/folders. Note that you just have to delete the game in the Steamapps folder, which is problematic.
- Steam restart. The missing file is reloaded.
