  • Open the Steam catalog. By default it is located in C:Program Files (x86)-Steam.
  • Find the file named Steam.exe, right click on it and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab at the top of the screen. At the bottom of the window, you will see the Run this program as administrator check box. Make sure it’s checked. Save the changes and exit.
  • Find the file named GameOverlayUI.exe. Right click and select properties. Select the Compatibility tab at the top of the screen. At the bottom of the window, you will see the Run this program as administrator check box. Make sure it’s checked. Save the changes and exit.

Avira

  • Go to the taskbar at the bottom right of your screen and click on the little umbrella you see there.
  • The window with the title Occupational Safety opens. Click on the Advanced option at the top and a drop-down menu will appear. Click Settings in the drop-down menu.
  • Select PC Protection and then go to Scan. When scanning, you will be presented with several options. Choose Exceptions and a dialog box will appear.
  • The address/path to the Steam directory must be entered in the dialog to exclude it. You can click the Browse button and select the Steam folder via the file explorer to add it to the exclusions list. When you have selected the folder, click OK and then click Add. Steam should now be added to the list of exceptions.

Bitdefender

  • Open Bitdefender and go to the protection window by clicking on the shield icon.
  • Click on the Show modules link.
  • Click the Settings icon in the upper right corner of the antivirus program.
  • Click on the Exceptions tab in the window.
  • Click on the list of files and folders that are excluded from the scan.
  • Press the ADD. Navigate to the Steam folder and select the folder named Steam to exclude it from the scan. You must also select both options before adding an exception.
  • Click the Add button and save your changes.
  • You can also add Steam.exe to the exclusion list by clicking on the list of processes that are excluded from scanning. When the pop-up window appears, you can navigate to Steam.exe, which is located in Steam’s main folder. Select both and save the changes.

Avast

  • Open the Avast interface.
  • Press the Settings button in the lower left corner of the screen.
  • Go to General and scroll down until you find Exceptions.
  • Expand the section and you will see a dialog box where you can add global exceptions. Go to your Steam folder with the Browse option. The default location for Steam is (C:Program Files:Steam). If you have Steam installed in another folder, you can browse there as well.
  • Once you’ve chosen your Steam folder, click ADD in the lower left corner of the screen. Click OK, and Steam will be added to Avast Antivirus’ global exclusions.

Windows Defender

  • Click on the Windows button and type Windows Defender in the search box. Open the Windows Defender security center.
  • In a new window you will find a list of available options. Select the Virus and Threat Protection option.
  • Access to virus and threat protection settings. Windows may ask you to allow the administrator to use this feature. If yes, click Yes.
  • Look for the window called Add or Remove Exclusions. Click on it and you will be taken to a menu where you can add exceptions. You can exclude folders, extensions and even files. In this case, we will exclude the entire Steam folder that is located in the folder where you downloaded it.
  • Click the Exclude folder option and navigate to the Steam Services Directory. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.

  • In the Threats and Exceptions settings, click the Configure Exceptions button in the center of the screen.
  • In the exceptions window, select Add at the bottom right of the screen.
  • Now navigate to the steam directory using the Browse button. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.

  • Open the ESET product from the taskbar icon in the bottom right corner.
  • Click the Configuration tab and select Computer Security from the list of options.
  • Select the gear icon next to Real-time File System Protection. After clicking, you will have the opportunity to change the exceptions. Click on it.
  • Click the Add icon and then navigate to the Steam folder. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.

McAfee

  • Open McAfee Antivirus by clicking on its icon on the toolbar in the lower right corner of Windows.
  • Click on Security Management.
  • Select the Schedule and Run Scan option from the Virus and Spyware Protection window.
  • Select the Scan Schedules option from the list of options below. A new window will open where you will see an Add button on the Excluded Files and Folders tab. Select the Steam folder after clicking Add via File Explorer. The default location of your Steam folder is C:Program Files (x86)-Steam. Once you reach the location, select the folder and save the changes.

It is possible that your computer’s firewall is causing this problem. To see if you turn it off.

  • Enter the firewall in the search dialog box
