Steam is a very popular online platform where you can get a digital copy of your favorite PC game. Instead of going to the store and buying a physical copy of the game, you can just download it to your computer, which is very convenient for most people. Despite being a stable platform, sometimes problems can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series, we cover the problem of a failed steam API initialization error.

Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes the corrupted temporary data that could be causing the problem.

Several factors can cause this problem, from an issue with the Steam client to failures in the firewall or antivirus software. Below are the recommended troubleshooting steps to follow to resolve this issue.

Adding pairs to the firewall exception list

It is possible that your firewall is preventing the Steam game from connecting to the internet, which explains this problem. If this is the cause of the problem, you should add the game to the firewall’s exceptions list.

  • Open the control panel by searching for this tool using the Start key.
  • Search option Windows Firewall .
  • Click Windows Firewall and select Allow an application or feature through Windows Firewall from the options list on the left. A list of candidates should open up.
  • Find the game in the list and check the boxes next to Private and Public Networks.
  • Press OK and to restart the computer .

Check if there is still an issue with the Steam API error related to initialization failure.

Do not use BetaToma

The beta version of Steam usually includes a few new features that the stable version of Steam does not have. It is also notoriously buggy, which is probably what caused this problem. To fix this, you need to revert to the stable version of Steam.

  • Open the Steam PC client by double-clicking on the desktop.
  • In the menu at the top of the client screen, click on Steam and select Settings.
  • On the Account tab, under Beta Participation, click Edit .
  • A new window should open, look again under Beta Participation and click to open the drop down menu. Select NOTE – Reject all beta programs and Apply changes .
  • Click on the Steam option in the upper left hand corner of the Steam window and select Output to shut down Steam completely.
  • Use the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc , press the keys together to open the Task Manager utility.
  • Click More Details at the bottom left of the window to expand the task manager and find all Steam related processes, such as. B. Steam.exe, Steam Client Bootstrapper or GameOverlayUI.exe.  Select them one by one and choose End Task in the lower right corner of the window.
  • Click Yes in the message that appears to warn you about how shutting down various processes can affect your computer, so just confirm it.
  • Reboot the Steam client and start the game from the Library tab.

Try running Steam as administrator

The Steam client may require higher authorization to execute certain processes, so you must run it as an administrator.

  • Find the Steam executable and open its properties by right-clicking on it.
  • In the Properties window, click the Compatibility tab and check the box next to Run this program as administrator before applying the changes.
  • Confirm all dialog boxes that appear, which should ask you to confirm your choice with administrator privileges, and Steam should now work with administrator privileges.
  • Open Steam by double clicking on the icon and try to restart the game.

Disable automatic deterrence in Comodo Internet Security

If you are using Comodo Internet Security software, the problem is probably caused by the automatic containment feature. You should disable this feature to see if it causes the problem.

  • Open the Comodo Internet Security user interface by double-clicking the icon on the desktop.
  • Open the Settings window by clicking Settings in the main screen, and click the Containment tab. Click on subsection Autosave.
  • At the top of the window, the Enable Autosavebox should appear. Uncheck the box to stop using this feature, which automatically blocks the execution of certain programs.
  • Alternatively, you can select the game’s executable file from the list below and uncheck the checkbox under the Enable Autobackup option to prevent the application from being blocked. Confirm the changes and restart the game to see if the problem is still unresolved.

Remove and install Steam.

If the above steps don’t solve the problem, the last option is to uninstall Steam and then reinstall it.

Impact protection

  • Open the Steam PC client by double-clicking on your desktop.
  • Click the Steam button on the top right of the window and select Settings from the drop-down menu. In the settings window, go to the Downloads tab and click on Steam Library Folders.
  • You should see a full list of all the libraries you are currently using here, as well as the folders to look for when backing up. Since the default folder is C >> Program Files (x86) >> Steam >> steamapps.
  • Navigate to the above location by clicking on any folder or file explorer and click on This PC or My Computer in the right pane. Then open the above location and find the folder steamapps .
  • Right-click on the folder and select Copy from the context menu. Go somewhere outside the Steam folder on your computer and paste the folder by right clicking and selecting Paste. The best place would be your office.
  • Repeat for all folders in the library. After uninstalling Steam, you need to reintegrate the folders as folders in the Steam library, just like the first time.

Removal of pair

  • Log in to your computer with an administrator account.
  • Click Start , then click the gear icon to open the settings if you are using Windows 10.
  • Click on Apps , which should immediately open a list of all programs installed on your PC.
  • Find the steam inlet in the list and tap it once. Click the Delete button above the list and confirm the dialog boxes that appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall Steam, then restart your computer.
  • Open the official Steam website, then download the Steam installer. Follow the Steam installation instructions.
