Stopping a workflow in Windows 10 can easily be done through Task Manager. However, sometimes this is not possible due to an error. A possible error, access to the process cannot be interrupted, is denied. This can happen when you try to close an application running on your computer. In this final part of our troubleshooting series, we’ll show you how to fix the problem.

Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes the corrupted temporary data that could be causing the problem.

Terminate the process via the command line

If the task manager doesn’t stop the process, you can try using the command line.

  • Enter the command line Start search .
  • Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as Administrator.
  • Type taskkill /in process name /f and press Enter. You can get the name of the process by right-clicking on the process you want to kill (from Task Manager) and selecting Details. This opens the Details tab where your process is already selected. Just look at the name of the process and type it in. Example taskkill /im firefox.exe /f .

Check if the problem persists and access to the process cannot be completed.

Try reinstalling the application in safe mode.

If the problem occurs when you try to run a task from a third-party application, you can try reinstalling it in safe mode.

  • Hold Windows and , press R.
  • Enterin msconfiguration Press and Enter
  • Select tab Boot
  • Enable the Safe Boot option in the Boot Options section.
  • Select Minimum under Secure Boot .
  • Press OK
  • Windows will ask you to reboot. Press Restart
  • After restarting the system, enter safe mode . Remove the problematic application. Press and hold Windows and and press R.
  • Enter appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  • Search and select the request
  • Press Clear and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Now reinstall the application by running the installer.
  • After installing the application, the Safe Mode option must be deactivated.
  • Hold Windows and , press R.
  • Enterin msconfiguration Press and Enter
  • Select the tab Loading
  • Disable the Secure Boot option in the Boot Options section.
  • Press OK
  • Windows will ask you to reboot. Press Restart

Check if the problem persists and access to the process cannot be completed.

Use WMIC to end process.

The Windows Management Tool console can be used to complete the process.

  • Enter command line command line in the Start search field.
  • Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as Administrator.
  • Type wmic process where name=’myprocessname.exe’, delete , and press Enter. You can get the name of the process by right-clicking on the process you want to kill (from Task Manager) and selecting Details. This opens the Details tab where your process is already selected.
