VLC is one of the most popular free media players available on multiple platforms. It supports most video and audio compression methods currently available, making it the media player of choice for most consumers. Although it is robust and powerful software, it can sometimes have some problems that we will cover today. In this final article in our troubleshooting series, we will examine the problem of CLVs inability to open an MRL file.

Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes the corrupted temporary data that could be causing the problem.

This problem usually occurs when you try to stream or play media content that is not on your local computer.  Several factors can cause this particular problem, from a corrupted media source to firewall failures. Below are the recommended troubleshooting steps to follow to resolve this issue.

Make sure the original media file works.

The first thing to do in this case is to make sure the original media file is working. You can do this by playing it with other applications. Go to File > Open the network stream and copy the URL that you want to access from there. Paste the URL into your Chrome browser or other media player. If it doesn’t work, the problem is probably with the original media file.

Disable firewall

To prevent the firewall from preventing access to the media file, disable it.

  • Press the Windows + I key to open the window.
  • Search Windows Defender Firewall and select Windows Defender Firewall.
  • On the left, click Enable or disable Windows Defender Firewall.
  • In either case, select the check box to disable the Windows Defender firewall.

Check that the VLC could not open the LMR file. Otherwise, activate your firewall and add VLC to the exclusion list.

  • Type firewall in the search bar, and then click firewall app that appears.
  • In the window that appears, Windows Firewall click Allow an application through Windows Firewall .
  • In the Allowed applications window that appears, click on the Change settings button and then select the check box of the applications on your computer that you want to allow to communicate through the Internet without being blocked by the Firewall.
  • Enable option Private and public to limit whether only secured networks may allow this communication, or also public and non-secured networks.
  • Click OK , and then Close to close the Windows Firewall window.

Disable anti-virus software

Your computer’s anti-virus software may be blocking access to the original media file. To check if this is the cause of the problem, you can try disabling the antivirus software temporarily.

If you are using Windowsprotection

  • Select StartupSettings > Update and SecurityWindows SecurityAntivirus and Threat Protection > Control Settings
  • Real-time circuit breaker set to OFF

If you are using Avast.

  • Find the Avast icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click on Avast shield management.
  • Look for options to disable the program – the options are to disable the program for 10 minutes, an hour until you restart the computer, or permanently (until you turn it back on yourself). Choose the option that suits you best, and then disable the program.

When using the AVG

  • Find the AVG icon in your computer’s system tray and right-click on it.
  • Click to temporarily disable AVGprotection.
  • Select how long you want AVG to shut down and whether you want AVG to shut down the firewall as well.
  • Press OK to turn off the antivirus program.

When using McAfee

  • Find the McAfee Antivirus icon on your computer’s taskbar and right-click on it.
  • Press Output.
  • A dialog box should appear to warn you that McAfee protection will be disabled. In this dialog box, click Yes to disable the antivirus program.

Check that the VLC could not open the LMR file.

Movement of VLC

It is possible that the problem is caused by corrupted VLC software. To get rid of this feature, you need to remove the program from your computer and then download the latest version from the official website.

  • Open a new runtime window by pressing Windows + R. Then type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open the Programs and Features window .
  • Under Programs and Features, find the VLC Media Player, right click on it and select Remove/Edit.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the VLC media player from your system and restart your computer when prompted.
  • Go to https://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and download the latest version of VLC Media Player. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest system version and reboot if necessary.

Check that the VLC could not open the LMR file.

File property

If the above steps do not solve the problem, you should try to claim ownership of the files.

  • Right-click on the error file that opens and select Properties.
  • On the Properties menu, click the Security tab and click the Advanced Access Rights button.
  • Press the Edit key above.
  • In the following field, type Administrator In the corresponding field, type the name of the object you want to select and click OK.
  • Then select the Replace all child object permissions items with the permissions items inherited from this object check box and click Apply.
