How to fix Windows 10 Ethernet connection that keeps dropping [Troubleshooting Guide]

As I said, we need to implement certain procedures to mitigate the problems and identify the culprit. You should start with the most basic procedures and then move on to something more complex.

Step 1: Check all boxes outside.

This is the most basic procedure to follow. Sometimes many PC owners rush after a while without checking all the problematic connections and end up paying high repair costs for a simple connection problem. Since this is the Internet, it is advisable to immediately check that the Ethernet cable on the back of the computer is connected to the modem. If it’s loose, try disconnecting and reconnecting it to make sure it’s connected properly. Do the same with your modem. Note that the Ethernet cable is usually gray or blue when connected from the modem to the computer.

Step 2: Changing ports and resetting the modem

Step 3: Temporarily disable the antivirus or firewall

Since security programs are an important tool to protect our PC from viruses and malware, it is important to disable them. Sometimes this program prevents you from accessing the Internet, even though you have made great efforts and the problem is still not solved. An example of an antivirus program is Avast. This program is strict enough to protect your PC from harm, but sometimes it is too strict to minimize your access and work. Even some programs may be marked as malicious for this program and you will no longer be able to open them, this includes browsers like Chrome or IE.

Regardless of the type of antivirus you are using, we recommend temporarily disabling it and reactivating it if the problem persists. The antivirus program basically has an icon in the taskbar, you can just double click on it and navigate through the settings and also temporarily disable it.

To disable the firewall, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start menu on the taskbar.
  2. Type Windows Firewall into the search field
  3. Press Turn the Windowsfirewall on or off.
  4. Disable the Windows firewall.
  5. Press OK to confirm.
  6. Go back to your office and try to use the internet.

Step 4: Clearing browsing history

If you use the browser regularly and never clear the browser history, this may be the cause of the problem.  No matter which browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc.) you are using, you can just go to the settings and clear the history. Here’s how:

  1. For Google Chrome
  • Open the Chrome browser
  • Press Plus (The three dots in the upper right corner next to the URL field).
  • Press Settings
  • Press Show advanced settings
  • Press Clear browser data
  • Select all the information you want to delete. Choose carefully and understand each function.
  • Select the following from , click on the drop-down arrow to select past hour, past day, past week, past 4 weeks, and start time. Here we recommend selecting start time to delete all historical data.

  • Close the Chrome browser.
  1. for Internet Explorer
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click on Tools in the upper right corner between the icons Security and Help .
  • Make sure you are in the General register. Otherwise, just click on it.
  • Under View Historyyou have two options Delete and Settings. If you want to delete all entries directly from history, press Delete. If you want your own settings, press Settings to adjust them. For some reason, it can happen that the Ethernet adapter does not turn on automatically after an upgrade and cannot connect to the Internet. This rarely happens, but just in case, it’s worth checking that it’s on. Perform the following steps to verify :

  1. Click the Start menu on the taskbar.
  2. Right-click on This PC in the left pane.
  3. Pressure Control
  4. Press Device Manager
  5. Click the down arrow Network adapter .
