How To Fix YouTube Freezes On Chrome Issue Quick and Easy Way

YouTube is one of the most popular video streaming platforms in the world. People can easily upload their videos and watch videos that other people are using on this platform. This service can be accessed from different devices. However, there may be occasional problems when trying to access YouTube. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series, we look at the problem of YouTube freezing in Chrome.

What to do if a YouTube video freezes in Google Chrome

Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes any temporary corrupted data that may be causing the problem.

Several factors can cause this particular problem, ranging from an outdated Chrome browser to corrupted data in your browser. Below are the recommended troubleshooting steps to follow to resolve this issue.

Google Chromeupdate

The first thing to do in this case is to make sure your browser is up to date. This ensures that all bugs present in the old version are fixed.

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • Press Plusin the upper right corner.
  • Click Google Chrome Updatee.If you do not see this button, you are on the latest version.
  • Press Restart.

Check if YouTube is still blocked in Google Chrome.

Clearing Chrome’s cache and data

Your browser typically stores data that allows it to perform better. However, it is possible for this data to become corrupted, which can lead to problems when accessing certain websites. You can fix this by clearing the data in the cache.

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • Press Plus in the top right corner (three vertical dots or an arrow pointing up, depending on your browser version).
  • Press Optional tool
  • Press Clear data display…
  • Select the time slot. To clear all, select All the time.
  • Tick the boxes for cookies and other website data, as well as for cached images and files.
  • Press Clear data

Check if the problem with YouTube freezing still exists.

Attempt to disable hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration uses your graphics card to render videos and images, usually making them easier to view. However, sometimes there are problems, especially if your computer does not have a powerful GPU. If this is the cause of the problem, disable hardware acceleration.

  • Start Chrome
  • Press Plus in the top right corner (three vertical dots or an upward pointing arrow, depending on your browser version) and then go to Settings .
  • Scroll down and select Advanced .
  • Browse to section System and set Use Hardware Acceleration whenis disabled.

Check if freezing YouTube is still an issue.

Try to disable browser extensions

Extensions can improve the use of the browser, but can also sometimes cause problems. To rule out that an extension is causing YouTube videos to freeze in Chrome, try disabling that extension.

  • In the URL line type chrome://settings and press Enter.
  • Press the Advanced key.
  • Then go down to Restore parameters to their original default values. Select Restore parameters to their original default values.
  • Press Reset settings to confirm.
  • Users who do not want to reset their browser can manually disable extensions by typing chrome://extensions in the URL bar. Then click the Off button for each extension on this tab.

See if YouTube is still frozen in chrome.

Update driver graphic card

And the last thing you can do to solve this problem is to update your graphics card drivers.

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, do the following

  • Press Win+R (Windows logo key and R key) simultaneously to display the Run window.
  • Type msconfig and press OK. Then the system settings area opens.
  • When the system configuration opens, press Boot tab. In the Boot Options section, tick the Secure Boot box and press OK.
  • When you are prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, press Restart , and you will enter Safe Mode.
  • Navigate to the local hard drive by pressing This PC , then Local Hard Drive C. Here you should see the NVIDIA folder. Right-click on it and select Delete.
  • Click Run and enter Run. Choose Run, the Run dialog box appears.
  • Type devmgmt.msc in the startup box and click OK , which should open the Device Manager window.
  • Expand Field Display Adapter . This list shows all network adapters installed on the device. Right-click on the Nvidia adapter you want to remove and select Delete.
  • Press OK when prompted to remove the device. This removes the adapter from the list and removes the driver.
  • Press Win+R (Windows logo key and R key) simultaneously to display the Run window.
  • Type msconfig and press OK. Then the system settings area opens.
  • When the system configuration opens, go to register Boot. In the Boot Options section, clear the Secure Boot check box and press OK.
  • When you are prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, press Restart.
  • Download the latest NVIDIA driver for your computer here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx.
  • Run the installation file and follow the instructions on screen. Select the Custom Installation option and select all check boxes in the Custom Installation Options fields. Also check box to perform a cleaninstallation.
  • Restart the computer

If you have an AMD graphics card, follow these steps.

  • Download the AMD Cleaning Utility from here https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-601.
  • Find the file where it was saved and double-click the AMDCleanupUtility.exe file.
  • A dialog box should appear indicating that the AMD Cleaning Utility has detected that the system is in unsafe mode, with an option to restart the system to run the utility in safe mode :
  • Press Yes , the system will reboot and the AMD Cleaning Utility will operate in safe mode.
  • The next dialog box will show a warning that the AMD Cleanup utility will remove all components and applications of the AMD driver.
  • Press OK to continue.
  • After pressing the OK key, the utility resizes to the system tray and displays the progress as a tooltip.
  • The cleaning process continues in the background.  To check the progress, move the mouse over the AMD icon in the taskbar.
  • When the cleaning process is complete, a success message is displayed. Press See Report to display the list of removed items, otherwise press Done to exit the utility.
  • Restart the computer.

Once you have removed the drivers, it is time to install the latest driver update. This can be done with the AMD Driver Auto Detect tool, which can be downloaded from https://www.amd.com/en/support.

  • Visit AMD’s Drivers and Support page for information on how to automatically detect and install Radeon graphics drivers for Windows.
  • Press the DOWNLOAD NOW key to start downloading the executable file from the device.
  • Once the download is complete, run the file to start the installation program.
  • Press Install to extract the required files.
  • When the extraction of the files is complete, the program should start automatically.
  • Read the end user license agreement and user upgrade program information.
  • Click the Accept button and set to continue, or close the window to exit the AMD Pilot Auto Detection Tool.
  • After you click Accept and Install, the utility attempts to detect the installed AMD graphics product and operating system.
  • After successfully detecting your system configuration, the utility displays the latest recommended and additional driver packages compatible with your graphics product, as well as the currently installed driver version.
  • Select the desired version and choose Express Installation.
  • After downloading the driver package, the installation should start automatically.
  • Restart the computer

With integrated graphics (Intel)

  • Press Windows logo + R to run .
  • Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box and press Enter to start Device Manager.
  • In Device Manager, expand the Display adapters .
  • Right-click on the graphics drivers, click Uninstall , and start the uninstall wizard to remove the drivers.
  • Restart the computer. Once the computer boots up, it should automatically reinstall the same version of the graphics drivers.

Check if YouTube is still an issue in Google Chrome.
