YouTube is one of the most popular video streaming platforms in the world. People can easily upload their videos and watch videos that other people are using on this platform. This service can be accessed from different devices. However, there may be occasional problems when trying to access YouTube. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series, we look at the problem of YouTube freezing in Chrome.

What to do if a YouTube video freezes in Google Chrome

Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes any temporary corrupted data that may be causing the problem.

Several factors can cause this particular problem, ranging from an outdated Chrome browser to corrupted data in your browser. Below are the recommended troubleshooting steps to follow to resolve this issue.

Google Chromeupdate

The first thing to do in this case is to make sure your browser is up to date. This ensures that all bugs present in the old version are fixed.

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • Press Plusin the upper right corner.
  • Click Google Chrome Updatee. If you do not see this button, you are on the latest version.
  • Press Restart.

Clearing Chrome’s cache and data

Your browser typically stores data that allows it to perform better. However, it is possible for this data to become corrupted, which can lead to problems when accessing certain websites. You can fix this by clearing the data in the cache.

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • Press Plus in the top right corner (three vertical dots or an arrow pointing up, depending on your browser version).
  • Press Optional tool
  • Press Clear data display…
  • Select the time slot. To clear all, select All the time.
  • Tick the boxes for cookies and other website data, as well as for cached images and files.
  • Press Clear data

Attempt to disable hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration uses your graphics card to render videos and images, usually making them easier to view. However, sometimes there are problems, especially if your computer does not have a powerful GPU. If this is the cause of the problem, disable hardware acceleration.

  • Start Chrome
  • Press Plus in the top right corner (three vertical dots or an upward pointing arrow, depending on your browser version) and then go to Settings .
  • Scroll down and select Advanced .
  • Browse to section System and set Use Hardware Acceleration whenis disabled.

Try to disable browser extensions

Extensions can improve the use of the browser, but can also sometimes cause problems. To rule out that an extension is causing YouTube videos to freeze in Chrome, try disabling that extension.

  • In the URL line type chrome://settings and press Enter.
  • Press the Advanced key.
  • Then go down to Restore parameters to their original default values. Select Restore parameters to their original default values.
  • Press Reset settings to confirm.
  • Users who do not want to reset their browser can manually disable extensions by typing chrome://extensions in the URL bar. Then click the Off button for each extension on this tab.
