When you see people around talking about next big thing, they don’t think much or they never try thinking big enough. They are not that imaginative, so they basically there is a lack of observation. So what’s the buzz here?
Internet of things is something far bigger than anyone realizes, Well it is something that has its presence everywhere.
In 1999, Kevin Ashton, executive director and co-founder of Auto-ID Center at MIT was the first one to mention the Internet of Things in a presentation.
Cloud computing and data gathering sensors are built based on Internet of Things. It includes a network of physical objects. Physical objects such as vehicles, devices, buildings and other things that are coupled with software, electronics, network connectivity and sensors that would enable objects to exchange information is a part of internet of things. IOT will allow things to be controlled and sensed across existing networks. The exchange of data won’t require human to machine or human to human interaction. This would create opportunities for direct integration of the existing physical world into computer systems. As a result of direct integration, efficiency and accuracy would improve. It would provide economic benefits as well.
Internet of things is virtual and mobile. IOT is going to make everything around us smart. It has been evolved from convergence of wireless technologies and many micro electro-mechanical systems Technology. This convergence has break the walls between information technology and operational . So you can imagine that a thing in the internet of things can be a human being with a heart monitor or an automobile that has embedded sensors that could automatically alert the driver when the pressure of the tire is low or high. So the real value of Internet of things is created at the crossing of gathering data and storing it. The interconnection of the devices is expected to spread automation in all the fields. We can see advanced applications like smart grid and smart cities.
Some of the recent examples are washers, dryers that function using Wi-Fi and smart thermostat systems. It is one of the platforms for smart energy management systems as well.
The internet of things won’t work without cloud based applications; because cloud based applications are the key for using leveraged information. Well here comes the importance of cloud, this enables the apps to function anywhere, anytime.

By 2020, according to the research done by Gartner, Inc. we will see around 20.8 billion devices on Internet of things. This gives a clear picture that in future large numbers of devices are going to be connected with the internet. Internet of things is the next stage of Information revolution and we will see inter connectivity from medical services to transport and what not.
With the internet of things all around, media industry is moving away from the traditional approach such as magazines, television shows and newspapers. Instead of this they are trying to tap customers at optimal times with technologies. The main objective is to convey the messages that go with the customer’s mindset. Well this application uses sensors to help in environmental protection by examining water or air quality, soil or atmospheric conditions. Its applications also include other areas like movements of wildlife. There are devices that are connected to the internet for giving early warnings for tsunami and earthquake, they can also be used for emergency services to provide effective help. IOT spans a large area and works accordingly. This area is soon going to be revolutionized by Internet of things.
In this world, there is a necessity to monitor and control all the operations of rural and urban infrastructure like railway tracks, on- and offshore- wind-farms and bridges. IOT can monitor any changes in structural conditions, It can also be used for maintenance and repairing activities by coordinating tasks among different service providers. IOT devices can control critical infrastructure.
The main mission is to improve emergency response coordination and incident management. This will further improve the quality and reduce costs as well. Areas such as waste management can also be benefited from optimization and automation.
The intelligent systems enable fast production of new products and quick response to product demands. There are digital control systems that would automate the operator tools and process controls to optimize the plant security and safety. The applications extend themselves to supply chain networks, management of manufacturing equipment, network control and many more.
