Red Dead Redemption 2 is an action-adventure game released in 2018 by Rockstar Games. The game is set in the Wild West and follows the adventures of outlaw Arthur Morgan. Although gambling is fairly stable, sometimes you can get into trouble. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series, we look at the Red Dead Redemption 2 PC crash.

Restart the computer before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting actions below. This action refreshes the operating system and removes any temporary corrupted data that may be causing the problem.

Check if your PC meets the system requirements.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game that requires powerful hardware to work properly. Your computer must meet at least the minimum system requirements to avoid any problems while playing.

Minimum requirements

  • OS: Windows 7 – Service Pack 1 (6.1.7601)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K / AMD FX-6300
  • Memory:  8GB
  • Graphics card:  Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 2GB / AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB
  • Hard disk drive:  150 GB
  • Sound card: DirectX compatibility

Recommended requirements

  • OS : Windows 10 – updated April 2018 (v1803)
  • Processor:  Intel Core i7-4770K / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
  • Memory:  12 GB
  • Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB / AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB
  • Hard disk drive:  150 GB
  • Sound card: DirectX compatibility

Once your computer is eligible, you should try to check if Red Dead Redemption 2 is still crashing.

Update your graphics driver

This game relies heavily on your graphics card to run smoothly. Therefore, you need to make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed on your computer.

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, follow these steps.

  • Press Win+R (Windows logo key and the R key) simultaneously to call up the Run window.
  • Type msconfig and press OK. Then the system settings area opens.
  • When the System Configuration tab opens, click on the Boot tab. Under Boot Options, check Secure Boot and click OK.
  • When you are prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, press Restart , and you will enter Safe Mode.
  • Open your local drive by clicking on This PC , then on Local Drive C. Here you should see the NVIDIA folder. Right click and select Delete.
  • Click Run and enter Run. Choose Run, the Run dialog box appears.
  • Type devmgmt.msc in the startup box and click OK , which should open the Device Manager window.
  • Expand Field Display Adapter . This list shows all network adapters installed on the device. Right-click on the Nvidia adapter you want to remove and select Delete.
  • Press OK when prompted to remove the device. This removes the adapter from the list and removes the driver.
  • Press Win+R (Windows logo key and the R key) simultaneously to call up the Run window.
  • Type msconfig and press OK. Then the system settings area opens.
  • When the System Configuration tab opens, click on the Boot tab. In the Boot Options section, disable Secure Boot and click OK.
  • When you are prompted to restart the computer to apply these changes, press Restart.
  • Download the latest NVIDIA driver for your computer here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx.
  • Run the installation file and follow the instructions on screen. Select the Custom Installation option and check all boxes in the Custom Installation Options fields. Also check the box to perform a clean install.
  • Restart your computer

If you have an AMD graphics card, follow these steps.

  • Download the AMD cleaning program at https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-601.
  • Find the file where it was saved and double-click the AMDCleanupUtility.exe file.
  • A dialog box should appear indicating that the AMD Cleaning Utility has detected that the system is in unsafe mode, with an option to restart the system to run the utility in safe mode :
  • Press Yes , the system will reboot and the AMD Cleaning Utility will operate in safe mode.
  • The next dialog box will show a warning that the AMD Cleanup utility will remove all components and applications of the AMD driver.
  • Press OK to continue.
  • After pressing the OK key, the utility resizes to the system tray and displays the progress as a tooltip.
  • The cleaning process continues in the background.  To check the progress, move the mouse over the AMD icon in the taskbar.
  • When the cleaning process is complete, a success message is displayed. Press See Report to display the list of removed items, otherwise press Done to exit the utility.
  • Restart the computer .

Once you have removed the drivers, it is time to install the latest driver update. This can be done with the AMD Driver Auto Detect tool, which can be downloaded from https://www.amd.com/en/support.

  • Visit the AMD Drivers and Support page to enable automatic detection and installation of the Radeon graphics driver for Windows .
  • Press the DOWNLOAD NOW key to start downloading the executable file from the device.
  • Once the download is complete, run the file to start the installation program.
  • Press Install to extract the required files.
  • When the extraction of the files is complete, the program should start automatically.
  • Please read the End User License Agreement and the Program Information to improve the user experience.
  • Click the Accept button and set to continue, or close the window to exit the AMD Pilot Auto Detection Tool.
  • After you click Accept andInstall, the utility will try to detect the installed AMD graphics product and operating system.
  • After successfully detecting your system configuration, the utility displays the latest recommended and additional driver packages compatible with your graphics product, as well as the currently installed driver version.
  • Select the desired version and choose Express Installation.
  • After downloading the driver package, the installation should start automatically.
  • Restart your computer

Make sure that the Red Dead Redemption 2 problem is not solved yet.

Try using VulcanAPI.

Several people who have experienced this problem have solved it by switching from DirectX12 to Vulcan.

  • Open menu Settings .
  • Go to the charts page
  • Unlock Advanced settings
  • Scroll down until you see option Graphics API .
  • Select Vulcan

See if RDR2 crashes are still a problem.

Playing the game as an administrator

Sometimes the game crashes because you do not have the necessary rights to open certain system files. In this case, make sure that RDR2 is run as administrator.

  • Navigate to where the game is installed.
  • Right-click on Red Dead Redemption 2.exe and select Properties.
  • Select the Compatibility tab and select Disable full-screen optimizations and Run as administrator.
  • Click Change settings for high DPI , select the Change scaling behavior for high DPI check box, and select the application. Press OK to accept.
  • Return to the Compatibility window and click Apply and OK.

Check whether the fault still exists.

Set integrity check

In some cases, the problem is caused by corrupted game files, so you need to make sure the game is intact.

By

  • Restart your computer and start Steam
  • In the Library pane, right-click Red Dead Redemption 2 and select Properties from the menu.
  • Select the Local Files tab and click Check Game File Integrity . .
  • Steam will check your game files – this process can take a few minutes.

Epic Games

  • Restart the computer and open the Epic Game Launcher
  • Go to the library
  • Look for Red Dead Redemption 2 on the list.
  • Click on the gear icon to the right of Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Pressure Check

Rockstar

  • Restart the computer and open the Rockstar game launcher
  • Go to Settings.
  • Go to tab My installed games
  • Select Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Press . Check integrity .

Try to see if the problem with Red Dead Redemption 2 crashing persists.

Disable antivirus

Avast

  • Right-click on the avast! icon. icon in your taskbar. Select avast! Control Panel and you have the option to disable avast for 10 minutes, 1 hour, until the computer is restarted, or to restart it permanently.

Bit guard

  • Double-click on the system icon for Bit Defender.
  • When the Bit Defender window appears, move the mouse pointer to the left and click on >> Virus Shield.
  • Move the mouse pointer over the black marker Virus Shield and click the mouse button.
  • Black strips become red strips, >> Virus Shield disabled.
  • Move the mouse pointer to the upper right corner and click on the down arrow.
  • The bit protector is now inactive.
  • To activate Bit Defender, follow the same steps as for activation.

Microsoft Security Essentials

  • Right-click on the MSE icon in the taskbar and select Open.
  • Click the Settings tab, then click Real-Time Security.
  • Clear the check box next to Enable real time security.
  • Press Save changes .
  • Close the IEM when you are finished.

ESET

  • Double-click the icon in the taskbar to open the main window of the application.
  • Or via Start >> All programs >> ESET >> ESET Smart Security.
  • Click Configuration >> Antivirus and Antispyware >> Temporarily disable antivirus and antispyware protection.
  • When asked to confirm the temporary stop, select Yes.
  • Note: Protection starts automatically after a system reboot.

McAfee

  • Go to the system tray in the lower right corner and find the McAfee icon.
  • Right click -> Select Output.
  • A pop-up window warns you that security will now be disabled. Press Yes to turn off virus protection.

Check if the problem still exists. Otherwise, add the folder and the RDR2 executable to the antivirus exclusion list.

Add the launchargument -ignorepipelinecache to your launcher

If the game crashes with error message ERR_GFX_STATE , then apply the following temporary fix, which should solve the problem.

RockstarLauncher

  • Launcher Rockstar Games Launcher
  • Select parameters
  • Under My installed games, select Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Scroll down to the start arguments
  • Add start-up options -ignoreilinechee
  • Select Match
  • Battle Red Dead Redemption 2

Epic Games Launcher

  • Start Epic Games Launcher
  • Select Parameter
  • Scroll to Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Select the Additional command line arguments check box.
  • In text box , insert -ignorepipelinecache
  • Back to main menu
  • Run Red Dead Redemption 2

Steam factory

  • Start Epic Games Launcher
  • Select Parameter
  • Scroll to Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Select the Additional command line arguments check box.
  • In text box , insert -ignorepipelinecache
  • Back to main menu
  • Run Red Dead Redemption 2

Try to see if the problem with Red Dead Redemption 2 crashing persists.
