Steam is one of the most popular digital video game distribution platforms, where members can stream their favorite PC games directly to their computers.  While it is a pretty solid platform, it does raise some questions, which we will address today. In this final part of our troubleshooting series, we’ll cover a connection issue between Steam and Steam servers.

Before following the recommended troubleshooting steps for this particular problem, try restarting your computer. This updates the operating system and removes corrupted temporary data, and is effective enough to solve a connection problem with the Steam server.

Steps to correct the fact that Steam is not connecting to the server.

  1. Check if steam servers are connected.

  1. Performing a Winsock Reset.
  • Right-click on the first item that appears in the search and select Run as administrator, type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, then press Enter.

Type netsh int ip reset.log and press Enter.

Restart your computer.

  • When you run Steam as an administrator, you give it permission to use certain system files to function properly. Find the Steam shortcut on your computer and open its properties by right-clicking on the element.

In the Properties window, click on the Compatibility tab

Check the box next to Run this program as administrator.

Save your changes by pressing OK or Apply.

See if Steam can connect to the servers now.

  • Sometimes this problem can be caused by the Windows firewall blocking the Steam connection.

Click on the Advanced Settings button.

Click on Rules for participation

Click on New Rule.

In the Type line window, select Program and click Next.

Click Browse under this program path to select the executable file for the program, and then click Next.

Make sure the Allow connection option is selected, and then click Next.

Select when you want to apply the rule (domain, private or public) and click Next.

Enter a name and an optional description, and then click Done.

Check if Steam is still having trouble connecting to the Steam server.

In the application list, click on Steam and then on Uninstall.
